Site Review- McGee State Park- Atoka, Oklahoma

We had originally planned to boondock at a nearby location, but after arriving we could not find an available site big enough for our RV to fit.

After a quick search we found McGee State Park and it was a perfect location to spend a couple of nights and just relax, while we planned the rest of our trip out west.

It is a small state park, but it does have locations for both RVers and tent campers.

There is a public bathroom area, small playground, swimming beach, and docks to view the lake from.

It was fairly busy when we stayed at the end of March. Noise from vehicles, people, and dogs is very common.

A camp host lives on location if you have any issues, and the area is frequently patrolled by park rangers.

Each site came with a picnic table, grill, and a lantern holder.

However, outside of the concrete pad meant for your RV, the sites were not level at all. Ours also had huge boulders right next to it, so, unfortunately, I did not feel comfortable with letting our toddler play on the ground. Older children with more balance would not have an issue.

The good thing is that this park does an online reservation system, and there is no delay time between booking and staying.

I booked our site on the way to the park. If I would have waited, we could have driven around to find the best site for us.

This park is one of the few that I have ever seen with a handicapped accessible RV site.

Wait to go McGee State Park for being inclusive!

The area was clean with very little trash on the ground.

However, there is not really a place to walk your dogs. I walked ours just around the campground and cleaned up after them, but it just felt awkward without an open space to walk them.

Cost to Stay- $25

This included only power and water. There is no WiFi or cable provided at this location.

Length of Stay

As long as you are willing to pay, I am sure you can stay. I did not see any price breaks for weekly or monthly stays though. They may not be listed, so if you are wanting to stay long-term call and talk to someone first.

Cell Service

Our cell provider is Straight talk, but it runs off Verizon towers and we had 4 bars of LTE cell signal. I was able to stream Netflix with no problems.

Do I recommend the area?

Yes. It is a beautiful location and the price is not that bad. It is more than we are willing to pay for more than a couple of nights, though.

Tips about the area

Buy groceries ahead of time!

Seriously.

This area does have a Walmart, but the Walmart had one aisle for cold goods (both fridge and freezer) and 4 or 5 aisles of dry good.

That is it!

There is no fresh food section for meats or vegetables. We only needed a few minor things so we were able to make do, but this is not the location you want to grocery shop at.
